I would like to take a moment to introduce myself and share a bit about what you can expect as we begin sessions together. I am a first-year master’s degree student in the Mental Health Counseling program at City College of New York. I received an interdisciplinary degree in Science, Technology, and Society where I focused on Psychology, Sociology, and Cultural Studies at Farmingdale State College. I also worked as an ABA therapist where I specialized in working with clients with developmental disabilities. My primary modalities of therapy are Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Psychodynamic Therapy, and Adlerian Therapy. My therapeutic approach incorporates: mindfulness exercises to help with stress management, reducing stress and anxiety, overcoming depression, developing self-compassion, and creating a meaningful life for yourself. I work best with searchers–open-minded, curious seekers looking to explore a path toward greater self-commitment and embodied self-awareness, so they might more easily move. The work I love to offer intends to sharpen your inner clarity, so that you may answer questions for yourself that might have once appeared unanswerable on your own. I’m passionate about working with trauma, relationship, and multicultural issues, and supporting clients in boundaries, increasing their self-esteem, and finding a strong sense of resourcing within themselves.
I believe therapy should be a safe, non-bias, judge free space where you can be seen and heard regardless of what you are going through. In our sessions together, we can challenge and explore where we currently are in life, and how to manage, cope and overcome obstacles with full transparency. If you are ready to take your healing journey seriously, we could be a perfect fit!
I am passionate about supporting people on their journeys of self-exploration, empowerment, and healing. While this journey looks different for everyone, therapy provides us with a unique opportunity to learn more about ourselves- our identities, the people and places that have shaped us, and life experiences. I have deep respect for the courage it takes to show up for ourselves in this way and believe we can do so with curiosity and compassion. I believe in the transformative power of feeling deeply seen and valued in the therapeutic relationship and have personally experienced how it can help us cultivate better relationships with ourselves and others. Together, we may want to explore practices that have helped you survive thus far and experiment with new or different strategies. You may be looking to understand big or challenging feelings bubbling up while navigating life’s complexities. Or you may want to feel more rooted in yourself and your values and want to shift into a more embodied way of moving through the world. Whatever brought you here- I’ll support you every step of the way. We’ll work together to explore your unique needs, while honoring your strengths and innate wisdom. I don’t see myself as an “expert,” rather a skilled and caring partner, excited to support you as we navigate this work together. I strive to be anti-oppressive in my approach, paying special attention to the ways in which people are impacted by systems and -isms as well as my own positionality as a therapist. I completed my Bachelor’s in Gender & Women’s Studies and Sociology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison and my Master’s in Social Work at Columbia University. I've been providing therapy in community-based settings for the past 5 years, working predominantly with female, trans, and nonbinary survivors of the criminal legal system and family court system as well as survivors of intimate partner violence/ domestic violence. I am especially passionate about supporting student activists and organizers on campus. My practice is neurodiversity-affirming and I have training in self-psychology and AEDP, a trauma-focused somatic-based modality. I am also completing training for internal family systems. Some of the theoretical perspectives that inform my work include attachment theory, relational approaches, liberation psychology, and narrative therapy. I am also deeply influenced by my abolitionist values. Therapy sessions with me typically occur weekly, although bi-weekly is possible for established clients. I am able to meet via telehealth exclusively (my practice is 100% telehealth with no in-person sessions). I am currently accepting insurance and am also an out-of-network provider. This means that you may be eligible to receive reimbursement through your insurance coverage. My full fee is $150 per 45-minute individual therapy session. If you are interested in learning more about what therapy with me might look like, please reach out to schedule a free 15-minute consultation by emailing here: margaret.horwitz@balancedmindofny.com

Psychotherapy can benefit people facing a range of challenges. Currently, I see adults and adolescents struggling with depression, anxiety, relationship or interpersonal difficulties, and sometimes with health/illness issues. I see many people experiencing distress and other symptoms associated with life transitions such as adolescence, marriage, new parenthood or challenges in family planning, divorce, professional or personal role redefinition, retirement, and aging. I provide counseling to individuals and couples struggling with the shifting roles and demands of these complicated times. Therapy is a collaboration. I bring a warm, curious, nonjudgmental nature, an appreciation for individual differences, spontaneity and value of humor. Together, we explore patterns, thoughts, and feelings from the past and present. Clients begin therapy not only with identified concerns but also with resources that can be harnessed for lasting change. I use an active, contemporary approach to psychotherapy. I integrate psychodynamic, relational and cognitive-behavioral models and, where appropriate, health psychology, tailoring my work to each individual and their circumstances. My goal is to help people find relief from their suffering and to discover new ways of experiencing life to its fullest.
Hi, my name is Anna. Feeling misunderstood and other-ed can be deeply challenging, especially if you navigate the world with a unique set of experiences or marginalized ones—whether you're part of the queer and/or trans community, Neurodivergent, facing complex trauma, or dealing with chronic illness. I'm Anna, and my therapy work is built on meeting you right where you are. I tailor my approach to fit you—not the other way around. My goal? To empower you through self-compassion and acceptance, grounded in a deep understanding of the intersections of identity, disability justice, and mental health. I understand the nuances and power of shared lived experiences and seek to empower the people I work with through self-compassion and affirming and unconditionally accepting care. I am passionate about and educated on how intersectional marginalization and systemic issues affect our experiences and struggles. My academic background in gender, sex, sexuality, intersectionality, disability justice, and oppression enhances my ability to provide knowledgeable and culturally competent support. My lived experience in communities also allows me to connect you to holistic support and additional resources that may be relevant since our mental health is so deeply intertwined with all other parts of our lives and bodies. Let's honor your journey together. Book a free consultation call with me for therapy that adapts to you and affirms every part of who you are.

I also provide adjunct therapy specifically targeting social anxiety. Before transitioning to private practice, I was a staff therapist at Columbia University Counseling and Psychological Services for eight years. I believe healing starts with genuine connection, and it’s an honor to be part of that process with you. My passion is helping people discover a fuller, more meaningful life, and I’m committed to walking alongside you every step of the way. With evidence-based tools and a compassionate approach, we’ll create a nurturing space for you to explore your values, hopes, and goals at your own pace. My intention is to always meet you exactly where you are and empower you to experience more freedom, presence and joy in your life. I work with individuals who want to understand their story more deeply; exploring childhood experiences, recognizing patterns, and healing from attachment wounds. Using evidence-based tools and a compassionate, meet-you-where-you-are approach, I’m here to support you along the way. Therapy is about understanding yourself more fully and finding the confidence to live in alignment with what matters most to you. The hardest part is often getting started. If this resonates, let’s talk. I’d be honored to hear your story and support you as you create the life you’re ready to step into.
While you are uniquely special, your struggles are more common than you think. We all have challenges, and often in very universal ways. It’s all part of the human experience. Psychotherapy is a great way to help guide you through life’s trials and tribulations. It can be profoundly healing to have a safe space in which to be affirmed and productively challenged. Together we can explore issues related to ambivalence, shame, resilience, boundaries, connection, confidence, and self-development in order to help you fully show up in your life. I have worked with individuals experiencing depression, unhealthy relationship dynamics, life transitions, substance abuse, and trauma, as well as with the LGBTQ+ community. I also utilize a variety of evidence-based methods such as Cognitive Behavioral Therapy, Motivational Interviewing, and Person-Centered Therapy. I base my practice around the use of empathy and empowerment. My style is warm and down-to-earth, while also naming things in order to illuminate insight and draw meaning. The key will be for me to support you in your own self-determination. Wherever you are today on your life’s path, I want to help promote positive change and growth.
You might be feeling overwhelmed, anxious, or unsure about who you’re becoming. Maybe you’re juggling school, relationships, or life between cultures—and it’s starting to feel like too much. I specialize in working with college students and young adults navigating anxiety, self-doubt, cultural adjustment, and identity exploration. As a bilingual (English–Mandarin) therapist, I understand how cultural roots and personal growth can sometimes pull us in different directions—and how lonely that can feel. My approach combines Existential Analysis with evidence-based therapies such as ACT, CBT, and DBT. I meet you with curiosity and compassion, helping you build emotional clarity, self-trust, and balance. Together, we explore the patterns that shape your story and nurture the parts of you ready to grow. You don’t need to have everything figured out to start therapy. We’ll take it one step at a time, in a space that’s thoughtful, collaborative, and fully yours.
"It's a privilege to be able to bear witness to someone's story when they may not have had the chance to tell it before." I’m here to hear you; to sit with you through the tough stuff, lift you up, challenge you, and cheer you on as we work together to identify and reach your goals. I help teens and young adults challenge depression, face their anxiety-driven fears, build self-confidence, and manage life’s stressors by taking a hands-on approach to problem-solving and building upon meaningful changes. I will help you identify and utilize your strengths, establish positive coping skills, improve communication, reframe the way you think, and build healthy habits. You are the author of your story, and I am eager to hear your history and help you identify what your next chapter holds. I believe people begin to heal the moment they feel heard, so it is my honor to be on the receiving end of what you are ready to share. I specialize in anxiety, stress, OCD, perfectionism, and body focused repetitive behaviors like skin picking and hair pulling. I will also work with you on self-esteem/body image, relationship conflicts, time management, depression, and life transitions.
