Therapists for college students near Georgia State University
My name is Katherine May and I look forward to helping you create a life that is peaceful, fruitful, and full of beauty. I believe in helping people build on their strengths, gain insight, and develop effective coping skills. I am a Double Dawg and love our Athens community dearly! My professional experience has included working with individuals, couples, and families in a variety of settings. I work with those experiencing anxiety, depression, trauma, grief and loss, work stress, adjustment issues, and life transition issues. I enjoy working with college students, staff, and faculty to discuss adjustment, and other issues that come up during this important time of transition. I also enjoy working with first responders and those in social services and the medical field, to cope with crisis situations and secondary trauma. My other passion is working with people experiencing work stress and learning how to establish boundaries to maintain a positive work-life balance. If you are ready to start your journey toward healing, please feel free to reach out to me via email. I provide a free 15-minute phone consultation to see if I may be a good fit for your counseling needs. During this consultation, I can answer any questions you have about the counseling process.
It can seem scary and uncomfortable to reach out to a stranger and be expected to share very personal details of your life. I will help you through the process and answer any questions or concerns you have. My office is located in Littleton, Colorado, easily accessible from Littleton, Highlands Ranch, Morrison, Lakewood, and Denver. Both in-person sessions and telehealth options available, extending services throughout Colorado and Georgia. I work with clients with a wide range of concerns, including depression, anxiety, relationship issues, life stress, grief and psychosis. I am trained in CBT, DBT, ACT, Interpersonal therapy and use various integrated approaches in sessions. We will dig into the hard stuff, but we will also have a little fun while doing it! Therapy should be a comfortable space to talk about all the things you feel you could never say out loud. This is the place to say & better understand it!
College can feel like a lot... managing classes, relationships, identity, family expectations, and your future all at once. At Favorite Therapy, we work with students who feel overwhelmed, anxious, stuck, or unsure of themselves. You might be the “strong one” in your circle, but inside you're struggling to keep it together. We provide a welcoming, judgment free space where you don’t have to have it all figured out. Whether you’re navigating trauma, stress, burnout, or just trying to find your way. We’re here to help you feel seen, supported, and more like yourself again. We offer virtual sessions and we accept PPO insurance plans with BCBS, Aetna, UnitedHealthcare, and Cigna, as well as self pay options with sliding scale availability. Therapy that meets you where you are so you can grow into who you're becoming.
I believe that mental health is a journey of piecing together multiple working parts, and I hope to be a part of that process with you. About Me I hold a PhD in Social Work and I am also a Licensed Clinical Social Worker serving the states of Georgia and Maryland. I received my PhD from the University of Alabama, my MSW from the University of Georgia, and BA from The University of Alabama. I have multiple years of clinical experience among various populations (children, teens, families, and young adults), various backgrounds, and in numerous settings (residential, inpatient, outpatient, private practice). I primarily work with ages 6-25. I also currently hold an academic appointment as Assistant Professor of Social Work. I am someone with whom people generally feel at ease and comfortable, which is an important part of what makes therapy work. My initial goal within the therapeutic relationship is to provide you with just that: a positive, safe, and comfortable place, where you feel at ease to talk about things that matter to you. Outside of work, I enjoy hanging out with my pets, finding challenging hikes, cooking/baking, going to the beach/finding water, gardening, exploring the city, and spending time with friends and family. I also enjoy picking up new creative projects and DIYs! Who I Help & What I Help With Who I Can Help Children (6-12) Teens (13-17) Emerging & Young Adults (18-29) What I Can Help With Relationship issues or losing a relationship Adjusting to and navigating life transitions Improving unhealthy/disruptive habits and behaviors Feeling sad or depressed Trauma and loss Feeling overwhelmed or anxious Feeling alone or disconnected from others Experiencing stress at work, school, or home Conflict resolution Learning to value and love yourself My Approach Types of Therapies It’s not uncommon for someone to enter therapy a bit nervous and with no clear sense of where to start – they simply want things to change for the better and to feel like themselves again. You are the expert of your own experience, but it’s easy to lose your way and feel lost when in distress. I will meet you wherever you are and help you piece things back to a sense of what normal feels like for you. The best approach is one that works for you, so I may draw on several different approaches to therapy, all of which have been shown by research to help individuals reduce stress, gain clarity, and make changes in their lives. They include but are not limited to: Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) Trauma-Focused Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (TF-CBT) Acceptance and Commitment (ACT) Person-Centered Therapy Narrative Therapy Culturally Sensitive Therapy Services & Payment At this time, all sessions will be remote/virtual video sessions and take place through a fully HIPAA compliant platform called SimplePractice. This is a great option for accessibility and flexibility, but please be sure to first, consider whether this is the most appropriate option for you at this time. Therefore, please do not include confidential or private information if you choose to email or call. Further and more detailed information will be exchanged through a fully HIPAA compliant platform called SimplePractice. I look forward to speaking with you! Types of Sessions Visits with me typically involve the following types of sessions: Intake Session: Assessment & Planning (60 minutes, Accepts Insurance, Private Pay Rate: $175) It’s important to feel comfortable with your therapist. For this reason, the first session serves to help you and me decide whether the therapeutic relationship will be the best fit. The intake is also an Assessment and Planning phase, which is focused on learning more in depth about you, your history, and what brings you to therapy. This phase also allows me to begin putting together a plan for future sessions if you are comfortable with moving forward. All follow up sessions after the initial intake session will be considered a regular therapy session. Regular Individual Therapy Session (30-60 minutes, Accepts Insurance, Private Pay Rate: $90-$160) Following the Assessment and Planning phase, we’ll decide when and how often to meet. Session time frames depend on your treatment needs and personal circumstances and are guided by the plan we develop together. Please note that 30-minute sessions are private pay only. These sessions may work well for children and adolescents, day-to-day check-ins, more solution-focused sessions, quicker access to therapy, etc. Regular Family Therapy Session With Client (30 minutes; Child & Adolescent Only, $135, Private Pay Only) When needed, family sessions provide an opportunity to strengthen communication, address relational dynamics, and support your child or adolescent’s progress in treatment. These sessions may include parents/guardians, caregivers, and/or siblings depending on the goals we establish together. Please note that all family sessions of any length are private pay only. Brief Family Therapy Session Without Client (15 minutes; Child & Adolescent Only, $45, Private Pay Only) These brief check-ins offer a dedicated space for parents and caregivers to share observations, ask questions, and stay connected to their child’s therapeutic progress without the client present. They are not a replacement for regular family sessions but rather, serve as a lightweight touchpoint between sessions when needed. Please note that all family sessions of any length are private pay only. Payment Options In-Network Insurance & Third-Party Payers I currently accept the following insurance plans in Georgia: Aetna Cigna/Evernorth United Healthcare/UBH/Optum Medicare & Medicare Advantage Plans I currently accept the following insurance plans in Maryland: Aetna Cigna/Evernorth United Healthcare/UBH/Optum Medicaid/Carelon Behavioral Health Medicare & Medicare Advantage Plans This means that if you are enrolled in any of these plans (or potentially any of their subsidiaries), your out-of-pocket expense is limited to your deductible and copay/coinsurance. While I can assist in determining what these costs will be, it may be helpful to ask your insurance provider the following questions prior to your intake session: 1. What is my deductible and how much is remaining? 2. What percentage of payments for outpatient mental health services does my plan cover after the deductible is met? *I am currently working to become a provider in network with Anthem as well as any applicable subsidiaries under Anthem in the state of Georgia. I am also currently working to become a provider in network with CareFirst as well as any applicable subsidiaries under CareFirst in the state of Maryland. Private Pay & Out-of-Network Reimbursement I also accept private pay, and if you have another insurance provider, you may also have out-of-network benefits. With this option, your insurance benefits may reimburse the majority of the cost of therapy. With both private pay and out-of-network reimbursement, you will be provided with automatic invoices, statements, and superbills for any needed reimbursements later from your insurance provider. I recommend calling your insurance provider to learn more about how reimbursement works. It may be helpful to ask your provider the following questions prior to your intake session: 1. Does my plan provide out-of-network coverage for outpatient mental health services? 2. What is my deductible and how much is remaining? 3. What percentage of payments for outpatient mental health services does my plan cover after the deductible is met? *Lack of insurance coverage, privacy concerns, flexibility, and quicker access to care are only a few of the reasons why one might choose this option. Cancellation Policy All clients are required to have an active credit/debit card on file at the time of scheduling an appointment. For appointment no-shows, last-minute cancellations, or inactive insurance, you will be charged in full regardless of reason. This is necessary, as a time commitment is made and held exclusively for you. You may still apply this fee to future appointments/copays. Contact Me Ready to get started? It is incredibly important to have a space where you can just be you. My hope is to provide a comfortable place to talk and process life events, to celebrate successes and to navigate through challenges. There are so many different areas of life that are important, and balancing them all, while finding time to process it all can be challenging. Sometimes dealing with family relationships while away at school can be hard, especially when they are changing and shifting. At times, learning to navigate anxiety and expectations for school and peers can be overwhelming. Figuring out how to balance it all can be a big task. My goal is to support and help you find ways to grow and learn, and navigate these times so that you can be and become who you want to be.
Find yourself often feeling out of balance or unfulfilled in life and relationships? Is it a struggle to maintain responsibilities to yourself and others? Having difficulty developing and engaging in healthy, loving relationships? If you're ready to get honest and uncover and undo the behavior patterns that hold you back, I offer a safe and confidential space for self-exploration with supportive feedback, guidance, and skill development to aid you in navigating those challenging times of disconnection.

I strive to provide a safe space to work through emotions and find effective ways to manage them. I help people process past experiences and current reactions that affect the decisions we make in order to promote healthy change and understanding of ourselves and our patterns. Oftentimes, we are not aware of the underlying things that influence our gut reactions which can create a barrier to us meeting the goals we set for ourselves. Counseling is a way to help you understand yourself better and to break down those barriers that stop you from moving forward. I have a wide range of experience in helping people navigate identity, trauma, anxiety, and ADHD. I like to really meet people where they are at in their therapy goals, get to know where you want to be, and help you develop skills and tools that will help you meet those goals. I am big on self-compassion and building confidence that can create success.
I work with young adults who are navigating anxiety, overwhelm, perfectionism, body image concerns, and challenges in their relationship with food. Many of the individuals I work with are high-achieving and driven, but find themselves struggling with stress, self-doubt, burnout, or feeling like they are never quite doing enough. My approach is warm, collaborative, and holistic. Together, we explore the factors impacting your mental health—including relationships, daily habits, societal pressures, and life transitions—while helping you develop practical tools to manage difficult emotions, build self-confidence, and create a more balanced and fulfilling life. I strive to provide a supportive space where you can show up authentically, feel understood, and work toward meaningful change.
