Therapists for college students near San Diego State University
I am a Licensed Marriage and Family Therapist with a love for holistic healing approaches. I go beyond talk-therapy, to treat issues including depression, anxiety, and trauma from multiple angles (mental, emotional, physical, and spiritual). As is common with many therapists, therapy changed my life and ignited my desire to do the same for others. I told myself if I could help just one person the way my therapist helped me, my life’s purpose would be fulfilled. My approach isn’t traditional; I know that each individual needs tools and interventions tailored to their unique experiences. Furthermore, I understand that a sense of well-being goes far beyond the thoughts and emotions we may struggle with. I believe in treating the whole person; mind, body, and spirit. I blend evidenced-based western approaches to psychology, including DBT and ACT, with eastern wellness practices such as mindfulness and yoga. I’m a wholehearted, empathetic therapist, but I’m not afraid to challenge my clients if/when needed. Not every client I treat has a life-altering transition, but I’ve witnessed significant shifts in the majority of them while processing trauma and treating depression, anxiety, and panic disorders. It brings me joy to work with individuals from various backgrounds and orientations. I work hard to get to know all of the intimate details that make you a wondrously unique individual, so that you may feel seen, heard, and understood. More importantly, so that we may work together in creating your vision for your highest self.
Here to help and support you anyway I can. Please reach out for free initial meeting to see if we are a good fit.
Whether you are feeling stuck, in a transition, or seeking support to heal previous trauma's that are holding you back to evolving from your best self, I am here to support and guide you. Maybe life threw you a curve ball or treated you unfairly, or you just want a space to grow as an individual. Regardless of your circumstances, I am here to hear and heal from your story. Your story deserves to be heard! I provide tele-therapy services for those who live in California using a HIPPA compliant platform and I currently have availability for in person therapy in Campbell, CA. I also am EMDR trained and currently receiving supervision to become certified. I currently have openings on Tuesday-Friday between 4:30 - 7:30pm for tele-therapy services.
Welcome! I'm glad you are here and you deserve the highest praise for taking this first step. I believe mental health is a spectrum of experiences and part of what makes us human. We can experience times when there are challenges to our mental health and times of flourishing. We all deserve a place to talk with someone who we know will not judge or shame us, but instead walk along side us, holding hope and strength until we can hold it ourselves. A bit about my approach to therapy: I offer approaches to therapy that are dynamic and relational in nature, incorporating a variety of modalities and perspectives (IFS, AEDP, Attachment based, etc). In our work together we can begin bringing awareness to the unconscious daily activity of the autonomic nervous system and how these bodily states impact our emotions and cognitions. What you can expect from our work together: A gentle space to land, recover, process, and heal from an unexpected change or difficult life season. We can be curious together not just about the “why” of an emotion but the “what” it feels like in the body and what the relationship with that emotion is. An encouraging voice on your journey to tend to, not only the needs of others, but also your own needs. A guide in cultivating curiosity and compassion for our stories and the ways they have shaped us.

My therapeutic style is warm and genuine and I like to use humor when appropriate. I am a big proponent of using therapeutic techniques that have good research evidence demonstrating their effectiveness. I specialize in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) for adolescents and adults. CBT teaches clients coping skills to manage their emotions and behaviors. It also changes clients' emotions by helping them change their thoughts and behaviors. I provide CBT to address the following presenting problems: depression, anxiety, OCD, PTSD, and difficulties adjusting to major life changes. DBT is an adaption of CBT that was developed to help clients with multiple problems in multiple areas who struggle with chronically dysregulated emotions. These clients may also have suicidal behaviors, self-harm behaviors, impulsive behaviors, difficulties in their interpersonal relationships, and/or Borderline Personality Disorder. I also have specialty training in the DBT Prolonged Exposure protocol for individuals with comorbid Borderline Personality Disorder and PTSD. In terms of my education and experience, I received my Ph.D. in Clinical Psychology from Stony Brook University in 2014. I then participated in my first postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Washington with Dr. Marsha Linehan, the developer of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT). Afterwards, I completed a postdoctoral fellowship with Dr. Jacqueline Pistorello at the University of Nevada, Reno, focusing on providing clinical services to college students and conducting research on evidence-based treatments for suicidal behaviors. As a faculty member at the University of Nevada, Reno School of Medicine, I taught medical students, psychiatry residents, and child psychiatry fellows about psychology, therapeutic techniques, and how to interact with patients. I opened my private practice in 2017 in Reno, Nevada and recently moved to Virginia.
As a young therapist, I bring both professional expertise and personal insight into the intricate dynamics of college life. Having navigated the complexities of college myself, I comprehend the intricate tapestry of pressures, relationship dynamics, substance use concerns, and the myriad challenges that accompany this transformative period. I'm not just a therapist; I'm a compassionate guide committed to your well-being. I’ve been through the complexities of college life and I understand the pressures, relationship dynamics, potential substance use concerns and the different challenges that come with this transformative period in your life. From the outside looking in, parents don’t always understand the challenges that come with college life, and I want to be that supportive other to help you get through it. Therapy is a sacred space and my focus is helping you get to the root cause of your struggles. I find that healthy relationships are the key for psychological, physical, and spiritual health. I provide awareness into your behaviors, and the ability to see the underlying issues of why you're unsatisfied with your life. If you're having difficulty regulating your emotions when it comes to romantic relationships, or feel that you find yourself in the same relationship again and again, then you have come to the right place. I will help you get to the core of these issues, and find yourself content with your personal relationships. I create space and offer insight into your behaviors, and together, will teach you about repetition compulsion. You will feel that you have control of your emotions, over codependency, and be free of addictive behaviors. You can heal. I am not the type of therapist that will sit back and just listen, I truly want to help you turn over your pain and be free. I offer a strong, empathetic approach, and teach my clients how to feel confident within themselves. You will receive guidance from me. We will be engaging in dialogue. I am direct but compassionate, and want to teach you how to be direct and vulnerable too. You will leave each session gaining insight into your behaviors. You will challenged and supported.
I help young adults manage the overwhelming stress of expectations, pressure, change and anxiety that can feel paralyzing. I come with no judgment, help you learn ways to manage this and feel better. I am here to help you and this is one big step to feeling better.

Hi, my name is Nathalie Torres and I am Licensed Clinical Social Worker. My focus is working with individuals who are struggling with OCD, emetophobia (fear of vomit), anxiety, and hair or skin picking. I use evidenced-based approaches like ACT, ComB, and ERP. Eating disorders can feel hopeless, but they aren’t. Whether this is your first time seeking help, or your umpteenth time, I believe that everyone can recover. There are many reasons eating disorders are invited into your life. Just as there are many reasons why a person develops an eating disorder, the way you recover will be just as unique. If there was a one size fits all solution, that would perhaps be as deceptive as the problem itself. Whether it’s perfectionism, judgment, loneliness, self-improvement, health, fear, family issues… Together we will discover what invites these problems into your life, and begin to find what recovery means for them. I have been in the battle with food and weight, caught in the war zone of an eating disorder, and come out the other side. Now recovered, I love working with individuals and their loved ones to find their own version of recovery, and find out what is keeping you stuck from living the life you desire. Through conversations, we will create space to discover your preferences, hopes and desires. Many of my clients have described me as the “anti-therapist,” which is a description I wear with pride. I bring enthusiasm, improvisation, imagination, and creativity into each session. My ability to think outside the nine dots and ask questions that others may not enables me to develop creative solutions with clients to help untangle what many would consider to be complicated problems. I believe in (and embrace) experimentation: the freedom to test things out and see how they fit, to explore the various facets of yourself, and to allow for complexities, and contradictions, and messiness… all the stuff the eating disorder hates and recovery needs. Eating disorders, are strong, they need something stronger to overpower them. I want to help discover what that is for you.
